Joro Spider Contest Deadline approaching.
Joro Watch has started their 4th annual Joro Spider Spotting Contest meant to monitor and collect data on the spread of Joro Spiders. The contest will end on Sunday, October 12, at 11:59 p.m.
Joro Watch was developed by the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. It is part of the Southern Integrated Pest Management Center.
To kick off their annual event, Joro Watch encourages people to take pictures of the Joro Spider for a chance to receive prizes and recognition.
In Clarke County, there have been over 400 reports of the Joro Spider being spotted. In the Southeastern US these spiders typically show up between August and October. Public areas known to have the Joro Spiders include the Oconee Forest Park, State Botanical Gardens of Georgia, and more.
To take part in the photo contest applicants must take their pictures of the Joro Spider and upload clear and focused pictures to jorowatch.org. Photos are judged by four criteria including image clarity, composition, scientific value, and creativity.

Changing the Narrative: Stories of Black and Minority Entrepreneurs is a compelling AADM documentary that spotlights the challenges, victories, and resilience of Black and minority business owners—underscoring their vital contributions to the local community and the need for equitable opportunity year-round. Premiered in February 2025, the film features Chalises Heavenly Inspired by Adrienne, Tahron “Maximdebonair” Watkins, Barnard Sims, and Nony1, and calls our community to actively support and uplift Black- and minority-owned businesses.

The Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department will suspend compost, garbage, recycling, and leaf and limb collections on Monday, October 13th, 2025, in recognition of the Indigenous People’s Day Holiday.
If you have residential service & commercial service with us outside the downtown district, your pickup will be on the following schedule: Monday will be collected on Tuesday. Tuesday will be collected on Wednesday. Wednesday will be collected on Thursday. Thursday and Friday will be collected on Friday. Please make sure your trash and recycling roll-carts are placed out on the curb by 7:00 AM on your pick-up day. We will resume our normal pickup schedule on Monday, October 20th, 2025.
If you have commercial or residential service with us and are located within the Downtown District, your service will be picked on the regular schedule.
